Middle, High School Construction Students Rewarded at SkillsUSA State Competition

April 25, 2025 - Approximately 31 students who are enrolled in Comal ISD middle and high school construction classes qualified and competed at the 2025 SkillsUSA State Contest this spring, earning superior and excellence awards for their projects.

As a career and technical education (CTE) program, construction courses offer students hands-on experiences, and SkillsUSA, a national organization, provides students with opportunities to enter their projects in competitions such as construction at the state and national level.

This year, a dozen construction students from Canyon High School submitted projects in the carpentry division, and all placed at the state contest with eight students receiving the state superior award and four receiving the state excellence award.

Three students from the Smithson Valley High School construction program submitted projects and received superior awards as well, with two first-year construction students and one second-year student. Two entered Adirondack chairs in the carpentry division and one entered a hardwood cross.

“They all worked very hard to complete their notebooks and projects,” says Joseph Percevecz, the CTE construction teacher at SVHS.

Three Comal ISD middle school campuses competed in the SkillsUSA construction middle school carpentry division including Church Hill Middle School, Danville Middle School and Spring Branch Middle School.
