April 23, 2024 - Comal ISD hosted the Spring Art Show on Tuesday, April 9, featuring more than 100 pieces of art created by students from 11 campuses. The original pieces included sketches, watercolor, oil pastels and more.
The artwork was created by students in kinder through 12th grades and was selected by campus art teachers to be displayed at the district’s support services office. During the show, artists were each given a medal as the teachers explained the different pieces. This marked the final art show of the school year. Previous art shows were hosted in October and January.
One of the pieces highlighted was a still life pencil drawing by Church Hill Middle School student Mackenzie Martinez featuring a clove of garlic. Art teacher Carrie Wenner explained that Martinez captured many details which enhanced the work.
Martinez said she chose the clove of garlic because of its unique texture and shape. The talented eighth-grade student enjoys creating art whether it is painting or sketching.
Another piece that stood out in the show was designed by Genevieve Opoku-Amoabeng, a ninth-grade student from Memorial Early College High School. Opoku-Amoabeng and her classmates were challenged to recreate the style of an artist for whom they admire. She chose Rebecca Kinkead who uses bright colors, pallet knives and nature as her backdrop.
“One of my favorite pieces of art is of a child in a field,” says Opoku-Amoabeng. “I wanted to learn more about the artist who created it, and that is how I found the bear with the woods and decided to try to replicate it. The colors stood out to me in an organized chaos.”
Opoku-Amoabeng replicated the original which is titled “Black Bear” with amazing clarity.
