April 2, 2024 - In the sport that is gaining momentum and garnering headlines, Comal ISD boasts a gold medal winner as well as seven additional medalists and a total of 31 state qualifiers. The sport is wrestling, and all state-level competitors were recognized by the Comal ISD Board of Trustees on March 28.
Smithson Valley High School senior Efren Arizmendez Jr. became the state 5A UIL wrestling champion in the 165 lb. weight class on Feb. 16, with teammates Nicholas Dudzikowski and Tristan Luna earning silver medals, Bryce Palmer with a fifth-place finish and the SVHS team placing fourth overall.
The Pieper High School wrestling team brought home some hardware as well with Meela Stubbs earning a bronze medal, Cameron Massie and Savannah Schaaf with fourth-place finishes and Ethan Cobarrubias with a fifth-place finish.
In addition, SVHS head wrestling coach Tim Clarkson was named the 5A Boys Head Coach of the Year by the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association.
