Davenport High Wolf Band, Color Guard Advances To State Marching Contest, 2nd Consecutive Year

Oct. 23, 2023 - For the second year in a row, the Davenport High School Wolf Band and Color Guard will represent the Comal Independent School District in the 4A UIL State Marching Band Contest Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the Alamodome, with its performance scheduled for 1:45 p.m.

The band was named the 2023 4A UIL Area E Champions out of 36 bands on Saturday, Oct. 21, in Corpus Christi. Just one year ago, the Wolf Band made district history as the first marching band in 19 years to compete in the state UIL competition.

“Once more, we are proud of our students for advancing to the UIL State Marching Band Competition,” says Jeffrey Keyes, DHS director of bands. “We are continuing to make history.”

The first year of the band program at DHS was the year that the campus opened its doors in 2020. Unfortunately, the band did not compete that year because of COVID-19. In year two, the Wolf band placed 15th at UIL Area competition and advanced to the state contest in year three, placing 7th in the state.

It is quite a feat to be named the best in the area in just a short timeframe, but this band has done just that.

This year's state-bound show is entitled “Up.”

“The show’s message surrounds the band program’s path over the past three years growing from 33 members to more than 150 members,” Keyes says. “It also offers opportunities to talk about life lessons regarding what to do when we fail – we get back Up.”

The lineup of bands competing at the state contest may be found here. The top 10 out of 26 bands will advance to finals on the evening of Nov. 1. Tickets may be purchased here.

The DHS Wolf Band and Color Guard consists of 157 students: 101 wind instrument players, 24 percussionists and 32 color guard members. In addition to Keyes, the program is under the instruction of Tyler McClendon, associate band director; Alexis Dillon, color guard director; Kelsey Lien, director of bands for Danville Middle School; and Nichele Gonzales, associate director of bands for DMS.

Congratulations and Good Luck at State!
