Virtual Meetings Highlight Benefits of Spanish Immersion

In South Texas, speaking two languages has a variety of benefits. As an adult, it can help you communicate with a wider audience, grow culturally, make better connections with others, and find greater employment opportunities. Being bilingual also can benefit a child. Learning a second language like Spanish can help them think more critically, improve their cognitive abilities, and be more academically successful.

Through Comal ISD’s Spanish Immersion Program (SIP), students not only learn a second language, but they can begin to build greater cognitive and academic agility at a young age. In first grade, 90 percent of instruction is delivered in Spanish. English is gradually added with each grade until students are instructed 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English by the fifth grade. SIP students follow State of Texas and Comal ISD curriculum like other students.

SIP is available to all students who have participated in a Comal ISD kindergarten program and meet certain academic requirements.

If you are interested in learning more about SIP for your current kindergartener, you’re invited to one of four virtual meetings at campuses that currently offer the program:

  • Hoffmann Lane Elementary - Tuesday, April 6, 6 p.m.
  • Johnson Ranch Elementary - Thursday, April 8, 6 p.m.
  • Oak Creek Elementary - Tuesday, April 13, 6 p.m.
  • Rahe Bulverde Elementary - Thursday, April 15, 6 p.m.

Choose one of these meetings and register here. Parents must attend one meeting for their child to be eligible to apply for the program. Applications for SIP are only available through these meetings.
