The Comal Independent School District received a District of Distinction award by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) on July 29. With only the top 2 percent of districts in the state receiving this inaugural distinction, Comal ISD is leading the way in providing a well-rounded education that advocates and integrates visual arts curriculum, inspires creativity and reaches all different learners.
“Comal ISD has set the standard for visual arts advocacy, integrated visual arts curriculum and creativity,” said Michaelann Kelley, Ph.D., chair of the administration and supervision division of TAEA. “This is a high honor. The award is a testament to the skill, perseverance and vision for a well-rounded education for this winning school district.”
Only 20 districts were selected from more than 1,000 which were eligible to apply for this distinction. Comal ISD was among those which met the high standard and rigorous criteria established for this honor for the 2018-2019 school year. Districts may apply for this distinction annually.
“We are proud to receive this award which truly showcases the dedication of our fine arts teachers and staff,” said Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim. “We also wouldn’t be successful without the support of our parents and community.”
Comal ISD’s visual arts program has distinguished itself among others by offering an extensive list of student opportunities on each of its 29 campuses. Student artwork has been displayed in local art galleries and shows, the Texas Capitol and the Texas Governor’s mansion. The program’s success, however, stems from its staff of professional teachers whose passion for their artistry is shared with their students.
“This honor illustrates the quality of our visual arts program,” said Comal ISD Director of Fine Arts Carla Schumann, “and it was earned because of the collective contributions from all levels of our department; elementary through high school. I am proud of our teachers and students who continually enter new competitions to showcase their talents and represent our district and our community. We are thrilled to be among the best of the best.”
The TAEA has previously honored outstanding members for work in their classrooms and districts, but this is the first year that TAEA is honoring districts that meet rigorous criteria as evidenced from data.
Comal ISD and fellow recipients will be honored at the TAEA Awards ceremony as part of the TAEA Conference on Friday, Nov. 15, 2019. The event will take place at Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston, TX.
